WARUN UNBUTTONED the top of his jacket as the afternoon sun grew slightly warmer. Maybe it was all the walking. He would have to thank Gareth more profusely when they returned to the hotel. This trip was exactly what they needed. The gap that had been opening between them sealed shut as they explored Penmon Priory and then Beaumaris Castle. They were both history nuts. They’d met for the first time as historical explorers at the Dyfi Furnace, a mid-eighteenth-century iron ore smelting factory, back near their current home in Aberystwyth. Gareth could be trusted to find different things to do for dates, like their second date to the sunken forest in Borth, just a few miles outside of town.

What was left of Penmon Priory had made for a nice, relaxing morning. Warun wouldn’t trade the closeness he’d felt with Gareth as they walked around the medieval monastery for anything. He had smiled at Gareth’s excitement when they learned Penmon had a holy well. They had to see it. Warun wasn’t sure Gareth really believed the water had any mystical powers, but who was he to judge if Gareth did?

They had traveled to Beaumaris Castle next, which had been a good choice. He pulled Gareth over to the moat, ticking a finger against his camera. “Selfie time.”

“You are so silly.” Gareth posed with him regardless. “It’s really a perfect castle.”

“Moats, turrets, concentric wall-in-wall construction: you’re right.” Warun slipped his hand into Gareth’s as they headed inside. Aberystwyth Castle was only ruins, like so many others in Wales, but Beaumaris was perfect. Maybe he should plan a castle hop as a gift for Gareth next time, or a tour of holy wells. He was beginning to understand the importance of being in nature to the druids, why his lover went into ecology as a career. The look of peace on Gareth’s face as they had trekked to the holy well made it clear.

Gareth put his hand on the gray stone of a castle wall. “You can almost feel the lives of the people in these stones.”

While he didn’t have Gareth’s spirituality, Warun followed suit. “Can you just imagine life back then?”

Gareth nodded. “There’s the modern day romance about it. Then you think about the lack of plumbing, the harshness of life….”

“No medicine, no TV—yeah, today is better.” He played his hand along the stone. “But you’re right; there is something intriguing about history.”

Gareth stole a kiss. “I couldn’t have done that openly back then. Yep, life’s definitely better today. Still, I might have liked to be a knight in shining armor, you know, right up to the time when I was going to be slashed or hacked.”

“We’re lovers, not fighters.” Warun helped himself to another kiss.

“Looking forward to proving that later.”

“Oh hell yes, but until then, two knights have a castle to explore.”
